The RHS London Greener Gardening Show
Blooms for birds, bees and butterflies, homes for hedgehogs, an insect house, a
beehive and an avenue of trees will transform the RHS Lawrence Hall into a honey
pot for urban and rural gardeners looking to support declining species and attract
wildlife into their gardens. The 2009 RHS London Greener Gardening Show will demonstrate
how to create a wildlife haven without letting your garden go wild.
Georgina Barter, RHS Show Manager, explains: "Gardens are a significant part of
Britain's landmass and can offer a vital diversity of plants for wildlife.
"Displays by wildlife organisations, including the RSPB, London Beekeepers Association
and The Wildlife Trusts, topped with RHS expertise and an urban biodiversity garden
feature, make this the most significant wildlife gardening event in Britain."
For the first time at an RHS London Show there will be an avenue of wildlife friendly
trees, which will lead visitors across the hall to an urban wildlife garden that
includes a loggery, low maintenance green paving, grey water irrigation and an animal
habitat tower.
The London Beekeepers Association will have a demonstration beehive and highlight
how to create a bee friendly garden and the different bee varieties that will visit
it. The RSPB will demonstrate how to make insect houses for living bird food. Other
organisations showing how to incorporate wildlife friendly features into the garden
include the Pond Conservation and the RHS, with on hand expert advice, green roofs
and demonstrations.
Central to attracting wildlife into the garden are the plants and specialist nurseries
and leading growers will highlight varieties in their displays that are ideal for
different species.
