Charles Rutherfoord Appointed as New Chairman of the Society of Garden Designers
The Society of Garden Designers (SGD) has appointed Charles Rutherfoord MSGD
as its new Chairman. He replaces Annabel Downs who steps down from the role after
three very fruitful and productive years.
Charles has been a member of the Society since 1994 and a MSGD since 2006. He has
been actively involved in the Society for the last five years and most recently
an important member of SGD Council.
Charles Rutherfoord said: “I have had the pleasure and privilege of working with
Annabel on Council for the last year and have been inspired by her clarity of vision
and her ability to forge new links and build relationships that have been hugely
beneficial in raising the profile of the Society.
Her drive and enthusiasm embodies the spirit of the Society and her deep horticultural
knowledge and links with other bodies in our profession has been a huge asset. She
has been a wonderful ambassador for the SGD and as I take up the mantle I hope to
bring that same clarity of vision and thoughtful and thorough approach to the role.
The Society is at a very exciting point in its development. It has grown over the
last few years into a significant professional body, well recognised in the sector.
I am excited to be taking up the position at such a pivotal time and look forward
to realising my ideas for the future growth of the Society in the coming months
and years”
Charles takes up the role as the Society launches its first annual Awards scheme
– the SGD Awards – which have been devised to recognise and reward talent in the
landscape and garden design profession. He will be also be involved with many of
the Society’s events, such as the seasonal conferences and RHS shows and will be
working to strengthen its long-standing relationships within the industry.
